Exclusive event: Linden Frederick’s NIGHT STORIES: Fifteen Paintings, Fifteen American Writers
Appearances by Linden Frederick, Richard Russo and more!
Painter Linden Frederick, working in Maine for almost thirty years, has created fifteen paintings for his exhibit NIGHT STORIES, and invited noted writers to create a work of short fiction or screenplay inspired by one of the paintings.
Print: A Bookstore has been given the exclusive opportunity to offer a limited number of the exhibition book “NIGHT STORIES: Fifteen Paintings and the Stories They Inspired” at an event scheduled for June 22! (The book will not be available at bookstores nationwide until September. In the meantime, the book will be available only through Forum Gallery and CMCA -- see below -- during their exhibit dates.)
From concept to the exhibit opening May 11 at Forum Gallery, NYC, Night Stories has been nine years in the making. Realizing his work was being collected by a growing number of writers, Frederick decided to turn the tables on a book illustration tradition and have their stories result from the art.
A couple of years ago, he asked a half dozen of his collectors to collaborate with him on the project, beginning with local writer and friend, Richard Russo. With Russo’s help, the roster of fifteen collaborating authors is an A-list of American storytellers, each with their own distinct, and sometimes, regional, style: Luanne Rice, Lois Lowry, Andre Dubus III, Elizabeth Strout, Ann Patchett, Anthony Doerr, Tess Gerritsen, Ted Tally, Lily King, Dennis Lehane, Joshua Ferris, Daniel Woodrell, Louise Erdrich, and Lawrence Kasdan. Each agreed to write a short story or screenplay inspired by one of Frederick's paintings and unique to the Night Stories project.
Frederick's work is rooted in small-town America and has sometimes been described as narrative stage sets, thereby provoking the imagination of some of America’s most illustrious storytellers. The exhibit Night Stories, and book titled, “NIGHT STORIES: Fifteen Paintings and the Stories They Inspired” - is a rich cross cultural experience of a visual feast partnered with provoking fiction.
Night Stories is on view at Forum Gallery in NYC through June 30, where the viewer can read the accompanying stories on tablets as they view the works. Night Stories then travels to the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, Maine and will be on view from August 18 - November 5, 2017.
