Colin Woodard is a New York Times bestselling author, historian, and journalist who has reported from more than fifty countries and six continents. A longtime foreign correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor and The San Francisco Chronicle, he is State and National Affairs Writer at the Portland Press Herald, where he received a 2012 George Polk Award was a finalist a 2016 Pulitzer Prize, and was named journalist of the year by the Maine Press Association. His work has appeared in The New York TimesThe Washington PostThe Economist, SmithsonianPolitico and dozens of other publications. A past director of the writing program at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, he is the author of American NationsAmerican CharacterUnionThe Lobster CoastThe Republic of Pirates, and Ocean's End. He is a graduate of Tufts University and the University of Chicago, where he was awarded the 1997 Morton Kaplan prize for his thesis on the causes of ethnic conflict in the Balkans. Born and raised in Maine, he lives in Freeport with his wife, Sarah Skillin Woodard, two kids and a small dog.
